Background

In the Swedish Red Cross (SRC) International Direction (2020-2023) integration of environmental and climate considerations in Disaster Risk Management is a key priority and a part of the development and operationalisation of SRC specific quality standards for and improved ways of working in SRC supported programmes in the field.

Your role in the organisation

As Thematic Advisor Environment and Green Response, you are part of the International Department and report to the Head of Thematic Coordination Unit. Your role is to coordinate all technical and policy matters related to Environment and Green Response in SRC. You develop and maintain standards for SRC programming (models, methods and processes), you build internal capacity, and you ensure quality of SRC operations with regards to Environment and Green Response. Also, you may be involved in policy work and the development of opinion pieces and advocay in Environment and Green Response. The work may involve traveling to internationally, sometimes to complex and potentially dangerous areas of disaster and conflict. Due to Covid-19 the extent of travel is hard to estimate at this point.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Providing country offices and sister national societies with on demand support and capacity building for strengthening environmental considerations in humanitarian and development programs. In addition, you will support the development of environmental assessment tools and strengthen environmental standards to support SRC’s programs.
  • Support National Societies or other movement partners in integrating quality standards and ways of working in programmatic activities in the countries of operation, as SRC supported programmes are often implemented by local partners, an important task is to . This work will be conducted in close cooperation with the Thematic Advisors in Health, WASH and DRR integrating environmental considerations (including climate change mitigation) in SRC programming. You will also be working closely with other Thematic Advisors as well as with the geographical desks, managers and staff in the field.
  • Your role is to help upskill SRC and its implementing national societies to understand, assess and respond to environmental risks and considerations within field programming. Experience in working with Sida’s Green Toolbox as well as other environmental assessment tools are assets. The selected candidate is required to complete simplified environmental assessments from a distance, guiding field staff to gather needed inputs and working alongside field-based colleagues to identify risk mitigation opportunities. Tools development, documentation and sharing of learnings are significant aspects of the work.
  • Your role includes following the developments within your thematic area of expertise and to function as a resource within the organisation as well as acting as a spokesperson for SRC, sharing experiences and best practices primarily within the RCRC movement, but also to external parties, in relation to integration of environmental considerations in humanitarian action and longer-term development.
  • Networking and maintaining a dialogue with strategic actors within the thematic area are also important parts of your role. You will represent SRC in sharing of experiences and best practices in global initiatives related to integration of environmental considerations in humanitarian action within the RCRC Movement. When relevant you will be expected to propose SRC positioning within the area of integration of environmental considerations in humanitarian action and to develop advocacy messages to support it.
  • Resource mobilization including proposal writing and program development is also included in your role.

Your profile

The position requires that you are comfortable working in an advisory capacity. You are a team player constructively coordinating with peers. You have experience in capacity strengthening of low resource organisations, and your analytical abilities are strong. You are self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and assume responsibility, and you hace capacity and willingness to promote innovative approaches.  As an SRC employee, you share the Red Cross Red Crescent humanitarian values including diversity and actively work against all forms of discrimination. You understand, respect and comply with the SRC Code of Conduct and security rules and regulations.

Required qualifications and experience

  • Relevant academic degree within environmental science, environmental engineering, disaster risk management, or equivalent professional experience of at least 7 years
  • Professional experience of 1-3 years of integrating environmental considerations (including climate change), especially DRR (disaster risk reduction) and/or health programming
  • Professional experience of 1-3 years of integrated multi-sectorial programming within an international humanitarian context
  • Knowledge and experience of the international humanitarian system, preferably from RCRC movement
  • Strong experience in capacity building and facilitation skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent command of English as a working language
  • Command of Swedish required for permanent contract

Desired qualifications

  • Experience in mainstreaming environmental or climate change mitigation measures in humanitarian programing
  • Experience from applied understanding and application of community resilience building approaches and working with community driven processes
  • Experience in developing learning or capacity building frameworks
  • Expertise in development of monitoring and evaluation tools
  • Command of Arabic and/or French
